A new cannabis-free city in Spain is proving to be a success story for a growing number of its citizens, with locals showing an unexpected interest in the drug that has helped them to live a healthier life and achieve their goals.
The initiative was started in the Catalan town of Las Ramblas, a city of around 15,000 people, and has already taken off with locals taking to social media to share photos of themselves with a cannabis-leaf tattoo on their necks and signs reading ‘Cannabis is a good drug’ or ‘Cultivate yourself, and the cannabis will follow’.
“It is a sign of our society to be honest.
The cannabis can help us with sleep, with pain, with depression, with fatigue, with anxiety,” one person wrote on social media.
“It can also treat certain illnesses, such as cancer, AIDS, chronic pain, autism and other mental and physical disorders.”
The cannabis-crazed city of Las Maravillas is not the first cannabis-based city in Europe, however.
“We are in the process of setting up a cannabis free zone in Amsterdam,” said the mayor of Las Roques, Juan Manuel García, after the first batch of people started visiting the city on Sunday.
“This is the first time that we have seen such an interest among people.”
Las Ramblicas residents also posted selfies on social networks showing themselves holding a cannabis leaf, a sign that their cannabis-loving counterparts have taken up the cause.
One of the people who took to social networks to show his love for the drug said: “I just started growing my own cannabis.
I have never used cannabis before and I will grow it for the rest of my life.” “
The cannabis is a great medicine.
I have never used cannabis before and I will grow it for the rest of my life.”
‘Crazy’ and ‘crazy’ at the same time?
In a way, it’s the perfect way to explain the phenomenon.
According to the Las Rambonas Mayor García and his administration, the first wave of cannabis-lovers were drawn to the initiative by the promise of the drug’s supposed benefits for health.
“They were attracted by the fact that it’s free from all the side effects that we see in cannabis,” García said.
García has previously stated that the initiative was designed to “change the minds of people”. “
But now they are enjoying it, they’re sharing it, and they’re helping others.”

“They came to see the drug as a drug to be used as medicine.
They saw it as a way of curing diseases and a way to live better,” he said.
It seems to have worked: García believes that the cannabis-use rate in Las Rambolas has now surpassed 100 per cent, and is now approaching 50 per cent in other areas.
“Our goal is to be one of the first countries in Europe to be completely free of the harmful effects of cannabis,” he told Spain’s El País newspaper.
“Because this is a positive thing.
It is a medicine.”
He went on to say that he expects the initiative to attract a similar number of new cannabis users to the Spanish capital in the coming years.
“In the next few years, we will be able to see more and more people coming and visiting the [Las Rambonascas] town, and I think it will be even more exciting,” he added.
Las Rambas has become a centre of cannabis culture as it has become increasingly popular among its residents and tourists.
In recent years, tourists have come from around the world to sample the local culture, with a few locals even getting the chance to get their hands on the drug and make friends with locals.
“When we started the initiative, it was very strange.
Everyone came and smoked.
It was like a novelty,” said one tourist, who wished to remain anonymous.
“We’ve created this city where people don’t come to look at cannabis, because the government doesn’t want them to,” said another tourist, commenting on the cannabis use in Las Maradoles town. “
People are more relaxed and the atmosphere is better.”

“Cannabidiol is very important.
It makes you feel like you are in a different place, and that’s a good thing,” said García.
“And I think we have created this great environment.”
